Maintenance of Screw Conveyor

1. Check operating status of screw conveyor components regular when in use, pay attention to fasteners. If any looseness of fasteners, tight screw at once.

2. When beginning feeding by screw conveyor, should increase the feeding speed gradually to reach the rated capacity. Feeding smooth, otherwise there may be blocking in transporting materials and overload of drive device which may cause premature damage of machine.

3. To ensure requirement of non-load start, no feeding before stopping screw conveyor, and it will stop after materials in casing are completely transported.

4. No large size materials to avoid the blocking and damage of screw conveyor.

5. Pay special attention to the screw between connection shaft. If any looseness, falling down or breakage, stop the machine at once and correct it.

6. Don’t remove the cover of screw conveyor when operating to avoid accidents.

7. Add lubricating oil regular for components of screw conveyor.

(1) Reducer should be added HQ-10 lubricating oil, and change oil 3-6 month once.

(2) Bearing boxes on both ends of conveyor should use 5g lithium base lubricating grease  half a month once.

(3) Hanging bearing should use lubricating grease every 3-5 month once.

8. Check every abnormal phenomenon of screw conveyor and solve the problems.

Troubleshooting of Screw Conveyor

1. Connecting bolt broken easily

As for the screw conveyor made up of couple sections, the connecting bolt located in the head section bearing the full motor torque, while the rear screw segments and the connecting bolt bearing the decreasing torque. Therefore, the connecting bolt located in the head section broken easily.

Solution: Using the high-strength bolt in the head section, if necessary, you can also adopt three bolt connect, so that insure the screw conveyor can normal operation and avoid the connecting bolt become shorten

2. Suspension bearing wear easily

There are many factors can affect the suspension bearing wear, such as working environment, working conditions, the characteristic of conveying material, suspension bearing structure, quality etc. Especially when operation the suspension buried in the material, if sealed and lubricated is not good enough then the material particle will easily fall into the connecting surface of bush and journal, which will make wear faster.

Solution: choose the wear-resistance bush and assurance the quality; besides you also should keep good seal and lubricated to extend the work life of the suspension bearing.

3. Suspension bearing installed improper makes the screw locked or bending

Solution: Suspension bearing should be mounted concentric with the connecting shaft and insure that all suspension bearings concentricity to insure that wire helix of each segment.
There should leave some place between end and the screw shaft end usually is 10-20mm; Each suspension bearing halves should be connected firmly, tight, and it should be keep proper radial clearance to ensure screw flexible rotation.

4. Too many materials piled up in the inlet

Too many materials piled up in the inlet actually mean that the screw conveyor emerge blockage trouble. For strong bagging feature, humidity, large bulk material, especially under the case that can’t feed uniformly, this trouble is easily to happen.

Solution: You are not allowed to feeding materials that can’t meet the conveying request; feeding should be uniform; In order to avoid trough distortion you are not allowed to beat the charging port.

Daily Maintenance for Screw Conveyor

Screw conveyor is bulk material handling equipment, which usually consists of a tube containing either a spiral blade coiled around a shaft (sometimes called an auger), driven at one end and held at the other, it is widely used in chemical, metallurgy, paper making, and construction industries, etc. Below you will see its daily maintenance methods:

What is Closed Pipe-type Screw Conveyor?

The closed pipe-type screw conveyor is a pipe with a shaft inside with welded screw blades and passive bearing. The screw’s blades have different pitch which depends on the type of the transported raw material and the planned capacity. This type of conveyor is closed, which means that the screw cannot be accessed directly. Due to the closed structure, the transported raw material does not spill outside the machine during transport. 
The machine can be equipped with a pull screw. In this version, the drive unit is located in the direction of the raw material feeding. Blocking Fault Analysis of Screw Conveyor

Since screw conveyor conveying space is small and it is sensitive to material, intertwining phenomenon is easy to occur when screw shaft rotates, blockage occurs in the place of hanging bearing. So blocking problem is the most common fault of screw conveyor which will affect production and increase power consumption, even the motor will burn out and screw shaft twist off which will affect the normal production. Blocking problem is caused by many reasons, we can take measures to avoid this problems:

1. Select reasonable screw conveyor technical parameters, for example, if using low speed screw conveyor the rotating speed can not be too fast.
2. Carry out the operation procedures strictly, non-load start-up and stop to ensure continuous evenly material feeding. 
3. Increase the outlet or extend the chute end dimension to solve the problem of unsmooth discharging or can not discharge material timely .At the same time, you can also install a section of reversed screw blade to avoid blocking. 
4. Clean up the material inside the screw conveyor in order to prevent big impurity or fibrous material enter into thescrew conveyor and occurs blocking.

5. Reduce the transverse dimensions of intermediate bearing as much as possible in order to reduce the possibility of material passing through the intermediate bearing.

The Reasons Why Screw shaft of Screw Conveyors Stops Rotating

Generally, if screw shaft of screw conveyors stops rotating, it mainly caused by the following three reasons:

1. The size of conveying material is too big and can't pass through the intermediate bearing, material resistance here is too big which will lead to motor overload and stop operation. Then you must clean up the material inside the screw conveyors .
2. The place of intermediate bearing resistance is large, sealing damages. Material will go into the bearing which will lead to bearing stops rotation or bearing damages.

3. Bearing of gear motor burns out.
If the reducer bearing temperature rises too fast after start-up and along with abnormal noise and reducer vibration, at this time, you should stop the machine quickly and the reason may be caused by the following aspects:
1) If the reducer output shaft bearing temperature is high ,but input shaft bearing temperature is normal. This is because the screw shaft centerline offsets or reducer output shaft bearing damages, or head and tail bearing loosens. Here you need to loosen the coupling between reducer output shaft screw shaft, correct and install.
2) If the bearing temperature of reducer output shaft is normal, but input shaft temperature is high. This is because the motor fixed components loosen or reducer output shaft bearing damages, you need to loosen the coupling between reducer input shaft and the motor, correct and install.
3) If both of reducer output and input bearing temperature are too high. This is due to the loosening of fixed bolts on reducer or both ends of reducer bearing burn out, here you need to loosen the coupling on both sides of reducer ,correct and install.

Common Troubles and Solutions of Screw Conveyor

1. Connecting bolts are easy to be broken.
Connecting bolts in head section support the torque of load motor of screw conveyor which is composed of several screws. And connecting bolts in middle and tail sections support lower torque. So bolts in head section is easy to be broken.
Solution: Use high-strength bolt in head section, or use three connecting bolts if necessary to ensure the normal operating and avoid the connecting bolts are too short.

2. Hanger bearings are easy to wear.
There are many factors affecting the wear of hanger bearing, such as working environment, conditions, property of conveying materials, structure type of hanger bearing, quality, etc. Especially when hanger bearings are buried in materials in operation, and the sealing and lubrication are not good, it is easy cause that materials enter bearing and shaft neck contact surface and make wear quickly.

Solution: Select bearings with wear resistance and high quality, and ensure good sealing and lubrication to extend the service life of hanger bearings.

3. Screw is broken because of improper installation position of hanger bearing.
Solution: Install hanger bearing which is concentric with connecting shaft, and ensure that all hanger bearings concentricity and keep the coaxility of screws. The hanger bearings should secure connection, and keep a proper gap with connecting shaft to ensure the flexible rotation of screws.

4. Blocking in inlet.
It is easy to occur blocking for materials with strong arch feature, high humidity, big blocks, etc. Especially in the situation of non-uniform feeding.

Solution: Don’t feeding the material non-conformity to the requirement. And keep uniform feeding without beating inlet.

Permanent affixed grids or polycarbonate can be installed for visibility purposes to allow the operator to monitor the operation. Besides, trough side walls should be higher to prevent workers from reaching into or falling into the trough. If it is an open troughs, workers must be protected by secondary safeguarding methods such as railing or fence. Feeding loading and discharge points can be guarded by enclosures, screening, grating, or some other interruption across the openings which allow the passage of materials but do not allow entry of the body.

How to Clean the Remaining Material of the Screw Conveyor?

There are two kinds of screw conveyer : tubular type and trough type. According to different designs , the cleaning method is also different.

Tubular screw conveyor: it has two cleaning methods since the casing is a steel pipe: water injection cleaning and ventilation cleaning. Water injection cleaning means that inject a large amount of water at the inlet and wash the internal tube, flushing the remaining water out of screw conveyor. Ventilation cleaning which uses the air pump or fan to bring the air inside the tube and blow the material out of the tube. The two methods are very convenient to clean up the material inside the tube.

Tubular screw conveyor

Trough screw conveyor: since the casing is trough type and there is cover plate on the trough casing, so please take down the fixed bolts when clean the material and remove the cover plate, then start to clean up the material. It is very easy to clean the kind of material, you can also clean it directly by air pump.

After completing operation of screw conveyor, a certain amount of material can not be discharged thoroughly, only when you make sure the machine stops running, you can start to clean the screw conveyor, otherwise there will be accident.
